If it were not for my friends and family, I would never have thought I could branch out into the uncharted territory of entrepreneurialism. But because of their support, I have launched my new baking business, Terri From Scratch.
My three daughters, Holly, Lauren and Kelly and my husband, Tony have always been my biggest cheerleaders in all things, but they have seriously rallied behind me in this venture.
When I bake something new, my kids are my guinea pigs. They take this challenge on with the seriousness and professionalism of seasoned wine sommeliers.
They inhale the aroma of my latest treat while scrutinizing the color and shape. Finally, they take a bite, luxuriously rolling it around on their tongues, tasting the nuances, trying to detect unique and specific flavors, analyzing the texture.
I wait, literally on pins and needles, studying their faces for a sign of sheer bliss or utter revulsion. I always know I will get an honest reaction and a through explanation from them because the ‘best’ part of children is there…er..uh…honesty.
They are excellent food critics and each will let me know exactly what they love or hate about what I have just given them to try.
I’ll never forget the time my Dad tried to trick Lauren into thinking SPAM was actually pate. Even at the tender age of three, Lauren knew her pate. Horrified, she spit it out and said “Papa! That is NOT PATE!”
Needless to say, my girls know good food.
Because of my love of cooking and baking, my family and friends have encouraged me to follow my dream of opening my own business selling my confections.
What would I have done without their support?
I would still be upset about not being able to open my own restaurant, a dream I’ve had for some time.
Life goes on, things happen for a reason, timing is everything.
Maybe someday I will get that restaurant, but for now…I am very happy to be Terri From Scratch.
