For me, scent is hugely important.
“The sense of smell can be extraordinarily evocative, bringing back pictures as sharp as photographs of scenes that had left the conscious mind.” ~Unknown
Scents bring with them good and bad memories. There are certain perfumes I will not smell or wear because I happened to wear that particular scent when I was going through a rough spot in my life. The aroma conjures up negative thoughts. However, I have other perfumes that I smell regularly to take me back to a particularly happy time in my life: a wonderful vacation, childhood, etc.
I have what people call ‘dog nose’: If there is a bad scent five miles away, boy, can I smell it! On the upside, if there is a good scent five miles away, I can smell that too!
Home Sweet Smelling Home
My house is always filled with what I hope are good scents. If I am not baking or cooking (when is that?) I have several candles burning.
My husband loves to come home from work and be greeted with the scent of the Eucalyptus Spearmint candle from Bath and Body Works. I can guarantee when he walks in and that candle is burning (which it will be if it isn’t Halloween – Christmas) he will announce to no one in particular,
“Ahhh! I LOVE that scent”.
Saturday nights, I have my ritual pre-date-night bubble bath complete with martini, candles and every incredibly aromatic bath salts, yummy bath bombs and delicious bubble bath products. 9 times out of 10, my husband will walk into the bathroom and announce “Ahhhh! I LOVE that smell! It’s DATE NIGHT!”
One of my favorite things is to have my kids come home from school and have them say “OH! What are you baking?! The house smells incredible!”
My daughter, Lauren, goes to college quite a ways from our home. One of the things she told her sisters was to make sure they appreciate how good our house always smells. That it is something that she misses horribly being away at school, and looks forward to every time she walks in the door when she comes home.
The Aromas of the Holidays
My absolute favorite holiday is, believe it or not, Valentine’s Day.
I LOVE Valentine’s Day.
I’m not sure what it is about that holiday, but it makes me so happy. I am all about decorating for holidays. My friend Bonnie teases me because I don’t have decorative lights for President’s Day because I DO have lights for every other holiday, and Valentine’s Day in particular.
Valentine’s Day smells like chocolate and happiness all mixed up with a tinge of my favorite bath bomb.
You know, all this talk about chocolate and happiness has got me inspired. I think it’s time to start practicing some new Valentine desserts.
Yeah. I’m going to make the house smell really good!
May all your days be filled with sweetness and good smells,
